Biogen
Biogen is a leading biotechnology company that develops therapies for people with serious neurological diseases. Based in Kendall Square near the MIT campus, Biogen has nearly half a century of experience in developing treatments for diseases like Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Spinal Muscluar Atrophy.
In 2021, Biogen launched the Healthy Climate, Healthy Lives Initiative to address climate, health, and equity. As part of this initiative, Biogen made a three-year, $7 million commitment to MIT, supporting research and programs across a range of areas at MIT — including the Technology and Policy Program’s Research to Policy Engagement Initiative. As part of this effort, Biogen underwrites a Biogen Fellow for select TPP students.
One such Biogen Graduate Fellow, Will Atkinson, focused his research on coordinating climate and air-quality policies to improve public health. “Climate action does not guarantee a clean air future, and vice versa — but the issues have similar sources that imply shared solutions if done right,” says Atkinson.
“Our work with Biogen has allowed us to make progress on key questions that matter to human health and well-being under climate change,” says TPP director Noelle Selin. “Their support helps all of our research become more effective in making change.”
